Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

Couples celebrate Valentine’s wedding anniversaries together on yearly gateways

Valentine’s Day has a very special meaning for three Simi Valley couples who take the time and make the effort to keep their marriages, and their collective friendship, strong and healthy. Being consistent and willing to work things out has been key for Ron and Janet Falat, Bob and Sue Nykoluk, and Pete and Florrie Gerber. The couples met by […]

County set to end COVID emergency order

Three years after public health officials first uttered the words “COVID-19,” Ventura County authorities are preparing to lift the emergency declaration that gave government the power to shutter businesses, mandate masks and vaccines, and enforce social distancing measures. On Tuesday, the Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 to lift its order Feb. 28, the date the state is scheduled to do […]

Potent alchemy for peace

Reagan skillfully mixed power and tact, Kissinger says

Former President Ronald Reagan knew how to promote peace through strength and diffuse tensions with words and composure, skills that today’s leaders need to develop, said former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger during a visit to Simi Valley earlier this week. “As president, he understood better than anyone how to integrate the elements of power and the elements of conciliation,” […]

Adventure-seeking outdoorsman, 22, ‘celebrated life in everything he did’

For Zack Zernik, hiking, climbing and exploring were second nature. From the moment he joined the Cub Scouts, Zack exuded an adventurous passion. When he got older, he could scarcely stand being indoors. “I was just supportive, so I set him free to go on the adventures he would go on, and I never wanted to hold him back,” his […]

Seven new members join COA board

Multiple projects in the works at city-owned center

Seven residents were appointed to the Simi Valley Council on Aging executive board, which makes recommendations to the City Council about programs and issues that involve senior citizens in the community. The council on Jan. 23 approved the recommended appointments of Marie Hale, Pat Kaufman, Carol Martin, Jeanie Mortensen, Janet Plant, Jeanne Schomaker and Pete Stong, who began their terms […]

Scout’s tragic death is a cautionary tale

EDITORIAL

Zack Zernik wasn’t afraid of anything, be it an opponent on the wrestling mat, a difficult piece of sheet music or a high-elevation climb. Such fearlessness enabled the 22-year-old Thousand Oaks native to excel in so many facets of life. Sadly, it may have also contributed to his death. An experienced outdoorsman, Zack was out for a solo hike up […]

Tapping water resources

Regarding “Wake up and smell the dying roses,” I understand Nick Moses’ frustration with the current drought situation, Sacramento and water restrictions. I agree that recent rainstorms did nothing but temporarily relieve our water woes. Unfortunately, restrictions are mandated by an agency with greater authority than our city— the Metropolitan Water District. But there are solutions. Simi Valley needs action […]

Get RVs, old cars off lawns, streets

The City of Simi Valley has ceased issuing parking violations (all violations) due to a few community members who do not want to pay tickets for parking their recreational toys on the street. They want the city to allow them to park on lawns and other areas not currently designated for parking. Drive around the neighborhoods. We now have boats, […]
