Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

ELECTION 2022 /// Mayor
Housing, youth, policing, economic development dominate discussion

Three of Simi Valley’s five mayoral candidates sounded off on a variety of issues and topics last week, sharing their views on affordable housing, the drought, the police department and how res- idents can overcome divisiveness and come together as a city. Joe Ayala, Robert Clarizio, and Mary Poitier participated in the Sept. 23 online forum presented by the League […]

Newsom chooses Ramirez’s replacement

BOARD OF SUPERVISORS

Gov. Gavin Newsom has named a replacement for Carmen Ramirez on the Ventura County Board of Supervisors. Oxnard City Councilmember Vianey Lopez, 35, will serve the remaining two years left on Ramirez’s term representing District 5. Ramirez was killed Aug. 12 when she was hit by a truck in a crosswalk in downtown Oxnard. “As we continue to mourn the […]

To bid or not to bid, that is the question

With latest wastehauling contract approaching its end, debate is underway

Conversations around the city’s longstanding trash-hauling contract are starting to heat up. WM (formerly known as Waste Management) has been providing trash pickup and disposal services to Simi Valley since the late 1990s, but its contract is set to expire in December 2023. Though the date is over a year away, questions are already being raised about how the City […]

Keeping the taps from running dry

As drought woes continue and the easing of water restrictions remains unlikely, Simi Valley officials and community members continue to discuss the crisis and examine strategies that could stretch the low water supply. At a recent City Council meeting, the use of reclaimed water was discussed and the impact new housing construction will have on dwindling water resources was debated. […]

Overpass connecting 23 to 118 could get lifesaving fencing

A substantial safety upgrade for the area’s most notorious overpass is finally getting some Caltrans consideration—but don’t expect changes any time soon. At the Sept. 21 Moorpark City Council meeting, representatives from the state’s transportation department presented preliminary plans for fencing to be added to the side walls of the curved overpass. Should the project move forward, the anticipated completion […]

EDITORIAL

We all, at some point, long for that special getaway. Whether it’s snorkeling along the shoreline of a tropical island, relaxing aboard a posh cruise liner headed to Alaska or camping in the Sierra mountains with family and friends, the change of scenery represents a refreshing change of pace. Even unwelcome travel mishaps can bring unexpected surprises. After all, a […]

Youth’s opinion on nuclear energy

I’m a Scout with local Troop 622 and as a part of my communications merit badge, I elected to write to an editor of a local newspaper about a subject of my choice, that subject being nuclear energy. We need to invest in nuclear energy. At the current moment, energy production is primarily produced through fossil fuels; however, this cannot […]

Reader supports Dennert

I am proud to support Brian Dennert for reelection to the Rancho Simi Park Board. He taught me in high school for two years, and has been a mentor to me years after. His dedication to students is what inspired me to pursue a career in education, and the civic education he encourages for his students makes him an excellent […]
