Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

PERFECT MATCH?

Applicants meet with prospective employers, explore career options at biggest-ever Simi job fair

Dressed for success in professional business attire, Simi Valley resident Becky Walters arrived Tuesday for what the city was calling its “largest job fair ever.” Held inside the shuttered Macy’s building at the east end of the Simi Valley Town Center, the Aug. 30 event sponsored by the city and the Chamber of Commerce featured over 120 employers offering all […]

Runners honor 13 Americans killed in Kabul airport attack

When it comes to the military, Simi always steps up. Hundreds of community members rose early Aug. 27 to hear speeches, pray and participate in the opening ceremony of the 13 Souls Memorial Run. The ceremony and each mile of the 13.1 mile course were dedicated to the 13 service members killed during the evacuation operation at Hamid Karzai International […]

Heat wave persists

This week’s excessive heat warning is no day at the beach. Blistering 100-degree and hotter temperatures are expected to last through Labor Day, forcing local residents to try and stay cool any way they can. If going to the beach is your plan for the weekend, traffic officials advise leaving early as the roads, including the 101 Freeway and State […]

Council reiterates cleanup request

The City Council agreed last week to send a new letter on behalf of the city demanding that Boeing Co. fully clean up toxic chemicals and radioactive material at the former Santa Susana Field Lab. The decision was made after the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board voted Aug. 11 to adopt a memorandum of understanding with Boeing. The […]

Labor Day honors America’s working-class heroes

EDITORIAL

Over the past few years, it’s become evident just how much workers at all levels of the economy matter. During the COVID pandemic we recognized not just doctors and nurses as heroes on the front line, but all hospital personnel, from janitorial staff members to admitting clerks. Same went for grocery store checkers and stockers—when there were items to stock. […]

Political Cartoon

FOR THE RECORD

In last week’s story “ Volunteers sought to lend a hand at upcoming parks and rec events,” it should have said the cost to attend Dia de los Muertos at Strathearn Historical Park on Oct. 30 is $10 for adults and $5 for kids. The event is not free as stated in the story.

A vote for Rocky Rhodes

We want a listener and a hard-working leader. I have looked into candidates for our City Council District 4 and am strongly in favor of someone who has not led us to CRT and parents being criminals for speaking up for what’s best for their children. We do not want government overreach and want someone who can stand up to […]

Stop growth for a sustainable future

Here is a perspective on the article in the Acorn on Aug. 27 about Canyon Ranch. The primary question: Is there any leader in the City of Simi Valley that is capable of thinking rationally about expansion? I read the discussion and I am bowled over to think that this city and this county and this state don’t realize they […]
