Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

More irrigation restrictions on tap for Waterworks customers in Simi

Golden State already limits watering to eight minutes per week

As residents watch their thirsty lawns wither under one-day a-week watering restrictions, local officials say even more drastic cutbacks are on the way to protect the area’s dwindling water reserves. Customers of Waterworks District No. 8 and Golden State Water already must follow a one-day per-week landscaping watering schedule, with no irrigation or hand-watering between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. […]

High-speed network to close digital gap in Simi Valley

The company behind Simi Valley’s new fiber-optic network gave a status report to the City Council last week and answered council members’ concerns about construction, privacy, and encroachment. The council received emails from residents and comments from neighbors regarding construction on private property, aesthetics, and possible tripping hazards. SiFi Networks’10-gigabit network, which will be available to all 47,600 homes and […]

Residents advocate for suicide prevention barriers on bridge

In February, good Samaritans coaxed a 23-year-old woman away from the edge of the Arroyo Simi Overhead. Had she jumped from the towering bridge, which connects Moorpark and Simi Valley, she likely would have died. Rocio Alvarez’s best friend wasn’t so lucky. Despite the efforts of police, who spent two hours in May trying to convince the man to step […]

20 organizations apply, seven get grants

Community allocations under scrutiny during council discussion

It was another year of tough decisions for members of the city’s Community Projects Grant Review Committee as they worked to determine which nonprofits should receive money from the city in 2022. The City Council last week approved more than $150,000 in grant funding that will be distributed among seven nonprofit organizations serving local residents. Officials voted 3-1, with Ruth […]

EDITORIAL

Undaunted by a reported 50% increase in airfares due to surging fuel costs and staffing issues, brave Acorn travelers are saying the heck with it and hitting the tarmac anyway for the promise of a great summer getaway in the U.S. and abroad. Drivers of recreational vehicles seem unfazed. Even with the cost of gasoline at an all-time high, the […]

Political Cartoon

Not a fan of Liz Cheney’s political views, tactics

This is in response to the article regarding Liz Chaney. She is not a true Republican. She has not helped the American people. She only wants to prosecute innocent people. She is trying to save her job because many Americans do not want her type of Republican in office. It really is a disgrace what she said about men in […]

Rep. Cheney is correct

President John F. Kennedy’s book, “Profiles in Courage,” if updated for 2022, would have a chapter dedicated to Congressional Representative Liz Cheney. Her dedication to democracy and the rule of law makes it all but certain that she will be vanquished in the Wyoming GOP primary come Aug. 16. The dark forces of neo-fascism and the cult of Trump have […]
