Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

Boeing Co. makes environmental play

Like mountain lions crossing the proposed new wildlife bridge in Agoura Hills, fundraising for the $90-million project goes one step at a time. The National Wildlife Federation, lead agency for the 10-lane bridge across the 101 Freeway at Liberty Canyon, announced last week that the Boeing Co. has made a $1-million donation toward construction costs. The latest seven-figure gift to the […]

How do you define “luxury” living in 2022? At Vantage Apartments in Simi Valley, it means a rooftop lounge (complete with a barbecue and sweeping city views), an onsite movie theater and a 24-hour fitness center. The developer of the property at 1260 Patricia Avenue in Simi Valley is hoping these amenities, and others, will prove attractive to prospective tenants. […]

Still questions pandemic mandates

If face masks and social distancing helped curb the spread of the virus that originated in China, please point to all the places where these measures were introduced and things improved. They’ve kept these measures, along with actually injecting experimental poisons ( aka vaccine) into the populace, but somehow things are worse? Huh? You mask zealots: Do realize that mask […]

Objects to ban

I have recently read that Gov. Gavin Newsom—who, for the purpose of this letter, will be referred to as Mr. Insano—plans to ban gasoline-powered yard and farm equipment. The reason being noise and pollution. Has Mr. Insano even considered the fact that the people who do this work will probably quit working due to the replacement costs of non-gas machinery? […]

CLU reneges on Gallegly project?

After signing a contract and Congressman Gallegly raising over $1 million for Cal Lutheran University to construct the Gallegly Center and replica Congressional office and to archive and digitize the documents from his 26 years of public service, one would think that CLU would honor the contract and have those records available online by now. Sadly, Cal Lutheran University appears […]
