Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

Amateur radio buff helps lead rescuers to lost hiker

Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego? Ben Kuo probably knows. The Newbury Park resident, amateur radio enthusiast, beekeeper and tech guru helped authorities pinpoint the location of a lost hiker in the Angeles National Forest on April 13 based on a photo the wayward explorer had sent to a friend shortly before his phone died. The picture, which was […]

Parcel tax bid fails to advance

A proposal to levy a tax on vacant parcels in an effort to push developers to follow through on projects that have been approved but not yet completed didn’t make it too far this week. On Monday, the City Council received and filed a report on the proposed vacant parcel tax that could have been used as one way to […]

In the spirit of protecting the planet, promoting clean living and sustaining a healthy habitat for all creatures, the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District recognized five individuals and one local club for their environmentally focused efforts in honor of Earth Day. The RSRPD board of directors handed out the inaugural Earth Day Recognition Awards at its April 15 meeting […]

Sheriff: Mug shot not public record

Police booking photos make good grist for social media conversation, but not all mug shots can be released for public viewing. Despite pressure on law enforcement and the media to release the booking photo for Rebecca Grossman—the Hidden Hills resident who is facing murder charges in the 2020 hit and run death of two juvenile pedestrians in Westlake Village— the Los […]

Caring for the Earth has always been a grassroots effort

EDITORIAL

A big reason why we live in our community is because of Simi Valley’s proximity to myriad hiking trails and open spaces—and from the ground up, our citizen volunteers, land-use planners, biologists and conservationists work hard to protect our natural resources. We all must play a role in keeping our beaches and waterways clean and our streets trash-free. It’s also […]

Political Cartoon

We must act now to save planet

Within the last few years, my community has been under attack. The source is climate change. Fires that are 10 miles away from my house; poor and even toxic air quality; and watching families uproot all their belongings and saying goodbye to their lifelong homes is all directly linked to our current climate crisis. As a student and active member […]
