Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

SURPRISE BABY

Mom didn’t know she was expecting

It was just an ordinary Tuesday—until it wasn’t. Victoria Chomo of Simi Valley got up, got dressed and headed to work Dec. 8. As she sat behind her desk at a medical office, the 22-year-old receptionist began feeling sick. Chalking it up to extreme pain from her period, she tried to shake off the discomfort. But when sharp pains began […]

Skipped again

Cavanaugh chosen as 2021 mayor pro tem ahead of Luevanos, who was next in line

“I’m asking you to truly demonstrate that we are united as a City Council in a time when we most need unity.” Councilmember Ruth Luevenos made that appeal during Monday’s meeting as she lobbied unsuccessfully to be named the new mayor pro tem. It was the second time that her peers on the dais chose to bypass her for the […]

Simi nurse is first in county to receive COVID vax

In a week that saw the coronavirus surge throughout Ventura County and much of the state, leaders and health experts heralded the arrival of the first shipment of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine that landed in California on Monday and was administered to county healthcare workers on Wednesday. Ventura County’s health department received 1,950 doses in the state’s initial batch, said Public […]

Delivery days change for holidays

The Acorn offices will be closed Dec. 25 and Jan. 1 for the holidays. Delivery of the Simi Valley Acorn will be delayed by one day for the next two editions. The paper will arrive on Sat., Dec. 26 and Sat., Jan. 2.

Incumbents define their goals for next four years

Safety, equal representation of all residents and teamwork were among the promises made by the City Council members who took the oath of office this week after being re-elected to the dais in November. Mayor Keith Mashburn retained his seat by garnering 37,671 votes, or about 56%, during the Nov. 3 election, according to the final results certified by the […]

SHOTS 4 HEROES

Adventist Health Simi Valley received 975 doses of the new COVID vaccine. There are about 1,000 full-time employees and an additional 700 contracted individuals, including providers, who use the hospital to care for patients, Adventists Health spokesperson Harold Pierce said. Julie Svolos, who was one of the first healthcare workers in the county to be vaccinated against the virus, began […]

Selfishness, not business, behind surge

EDITORIAL

It’s not new orders, restrictions or gubernatorial decrees that are going to get us through the final wretched months of the coronavirus. It’s not the police or the health department. It is us. At this point it’s fair to say we as a county have failed to prevent a winter surge, which some experts had warned would come since the […]

Political Cartoon

Already looking forward to 2022 election

Congressman Garcia’s narrow reelection might be a cause to celebrate for folks who spent more time decorating their giant trucks with gaudy Trump flags and stickers than evaluating his performance. However, for those of us who expected sane legislating and dignified leadership, the next two years will be just as disheartening as the previous seven months. I have called the […]

Do something about the power shut-offs

These Public Safety Power Shutoffs are complete B.S. So what are you going to do about it? Thank you, Mayor Mashburn, for your guest opinion article and for explaining what you are doing to help all of us. Thank you also for giving us the California Public Utilities Commission’s number and address, and your call to us to flood their […]
