Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

RVC co-founder shares her views on politics and COVID policies

For Deborah Baber (Savalla), freedom of choice is not negotiable. As county and state officials urge people to wear face coverings to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the Port Hueneme resident is determined to bare her face. “I will be responsible for my health, not the government,” she told the Acorn. Baber, the daughter of a career U.S. Air Force […]

Navy vets bring flag tribute home

The nearly 3,000 flags lined up today near the entrance of the Simi Hills Golf Course are meant to serve as a reminder of the lives lost during the 9/11 attack 19 years ago. This year, Simi Valley is one of many cities nationwide displaying 2,977 American flags— one for every person who perished during the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist […]

County numbers improve, leniency sought

COVID-19 | UPDATE

Ventura County hasn’t checked all the boxes to advance to the next stage in Gov. Gavin Newsom’s new color-coded COVID reopening tier system, but county authorities are hoping to be given an exception. Newsom’s “Blueprint for a Safer Economy” places counties in one of four colored tiers based on two metrics—new COVID-19 cases and percentage of positive to negative tests—purple […]

Local commuter train service back on track

Metrolink resumed service on two of its Ventura County lines this week after halting trains due to COVID-19. On Tuesday, Ventura County Line trains 101 and 110 began servicing commuters once again with stops connecting Los Angeles to Simi Valley, Moorpark, Chatsworth, Northridge, Burbank and Glendale. The early morning departure of the eastbound 110 train from the Moorpark station marks […]

Remembering the lessons of 9/11

EDITORIAL

Today marks the 19th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of 9/11, and flags throughout Ventura County and nationwide will be at half-staff. At Simi Hills Golf Course, a display of 2,977 flags is being unfurled (see story Page 1) to pay tribute to the fallen. It’s an emotional challenge to honor victims of one disaster even as we attempt to […]

Garcia is the right choice for America

First, Mr. Hurst claims President Trump has not requested information that Russia has put a bounty on American soldiers killed by the Taliban. How does he know what the president has or hasn’t requested information about? The White House has stated this is being looked into and a proper response will be taken if found to be true. It seems […]

Supports Litster in District 3 race

As a volunteer, I have worked alongside Elaine Litster over the past six years and find her to be intelligent, principled, honest, thoughtful and genuinely one of the nicest people I know. When she was appointed to the City Council, I knew she would be the kind of representative who would look out for the best of interests of our […]
