Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

Rancho Simi introduces
Berylwood Skate Plaza

Skateboarders can now celebrate with jumps, kickflips and spins at Ventura County’s newest skate park. The Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its long-awaited Skate Plaza at Berylwood Park on Tuesday. The 5,200-square-foot site at 1955 Bridget Avenue incorporates design elements to test every skating skill. It features ramps, low walls, benches, curbs, slide rails, jumps and […]

Judge won’t enforce order against Newbury Park church

Indoor worship services—in violation of county and state public health orders— will go on at Godspeak Calvary Chapel on Sunday after a judge denied a request by the County of Ventura to direct sheriff’s deputies to intervene and stop them. Tuesday’s hearing was before Judge Vincent O’Neill and not Judge Matthew Guasco, the magistrate who granted a temporary restraining order […]

Seed mystery is still growing

When Anna LeClair opened her mailbox last week and found a small white package with a China Post logo in the top left corner, she stared in disbelief. Just days before, her husband had told her about mysterious packages of seeds being mailed to thousands of people across the country, but she didn’t put much stock in it—much less expect […]

Faith leaders come together to spread message of hope, unity

Race and religion is the focus of an online webinar next week. The Simi Valley Interfaith Council’s third Faith and Spirituality Forum takes place via Zoom at 7 p.m. Aug. 20 and local leaders from the Christian, Jewish, Bahá’í, Muslim and pagan faiths are slated to take part, according to a news release from the group. The Interfaith Council is […]

Acorn making sure your voice is heard

EDITORIAL

Letters to the editor. You may love them or hate them. But what we’ve learned over decades with our community newspaper is everybody reads them. Many Acorn critics point to the Letters section as proof positive that the paper carries a bias—be it left or right—and say we pick and choose submissions based on our political leaning. But the criticism […]

Political Cartoon

Lincoln quote rings true

About 10 years ago I bought a T-shirt that said “Freedom Requires a Free Press.” At the time I thought it represented an expression of American values. Two weeks ago as I was leaving the house with that shirt on, my wife expressed concern. She said she was worried that someone would take offense at the message and attack me. […]

Dem agenda will destroy country

Jeannine Linder is deeply disturbed by the direction our country has taken. I agree completely. What the man did to her daughter was wrong and should never happen to anyone. But how she got to President Trump encouraging people to be “their basest, most primitive selves” and to “physically attack people with different opinions” is a leap too far. Maybe […]

Respect all council members

I had all but given up reading the Acorn given the unbalanced letters to the editor section that I never felt represented the city and, quite frankly, has been an embarrassment. I wish to thank those who took the time to write in sharing their views and I applaud the paper for finding more balance in letters published. I encourage […]
