Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

Law enforcement budget under scrutiny amid protests

Council focuses on facts and figures while critics demand funding reform

As protesters here and across the country continue to march against police brutality and push for an overhaul of law enforcement, the idea of how to fund local police departments has become a contentious debate. Some believe the departments’ budgets should be slashed to free up money for much-needed social service programs, others believe the departments are underfunded and need […]

Chokehold banned

SVPD, VCSO update policies

The Simi Valley Police Department has banned the carotid chokehold, a technique used to subdue combative people. The move comes after Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered law enforcement agencies on June 5 to stop using the tactic, in which officers wrap an arm around a person’s neck and apply pressure. The move restricts blood flow to a person’s brain and can […]

When a child thrives, a father is blessed

EDITORIAL

The role of fathers has evolved a great deal over the last century, from primary breadwinner and disciplinarian to engaged and doting parent. Fatherhood begins from the moment a child is conceived. It’s a lifelong duty and a privilege. Last week, when Trina Galvis told her dad, Al, that she and her fiance, Jens Jeters, were still hoping to get […]

Indignant over governor’s calls

First my thoughts and prayers go out to all who have lost a loved one due to the COVID virus. I wonder, were you allowed to visit those who were in nursing homes or hospitals? Allowed to say goodbye or provide comfort in their last hours? Gov. Newsom, you have kept people from visiting their places of worship. You have […]

Post-protest note

Now that the June protest is in our rearview mirror, I would like to see something from all of you. The police officers that protect you and your community did nothing wrong. They do what they always do. Protect and serve. They were reviled, attacked and, in a few cases, murdered. They were called horrible names and saw signs made […]
