Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

CHP wants drivers to avoid a zoom meeting on the road

More motorists hitting speeds over 100 mph

During the coronavirus lockdown, there are fewer drivers headed to fewer open destinations. Those who are on the road, however, appear to be in a hurry to get to where they’re going. Compared to this time last year, traffic volume on state roads has dropped about 35%, according to Caltrans. Meanwhile, for the month beginning March 19, the day the […]

Heartfelt send-off

FREE Simi delivers stirring show of support for fallen Marine’s family

Regard for military service members is a long-held tradition in Simi Valley, and the community didn’t disappoint last Sunday when more than 1,500 people turned out to honor a fallen Marine and his family. At 10 a.m. April 26, a Los Angeles police helicopter flew over the home of the Pongo family on Katherine Road to kick off a memorial […]

Supervisor Huber digs in to find out why Simi Valley is first in COVID cases

When Bob Huber took his seat on the Ventura County Board of Supervisors in January 2019, he never imagined that one of the greatest challenges he would face would be a viral pandemic. Since the COVID-19 outbreak began sweeping through the United States, 535 people across Ventura County have tested positive for the virus and 18 have died, according to […]

Garcia, Smith face off in virtual forum

Solving problems shouldn’t be a partisan issue. That’s one topic the two candidates running for the 25th Congressional District say they agree on, but the political groups that are campaigning for them don’t seem to have gotten the memo. On April 24, the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce hosted a virtual forum for candidates Mike Garcia and Christy Smith, […]

Family struggles to make sense of tragedy

Arraignment for stabbing suspect postponed

What began as an argument over property ended with the death of a 35-year-old Simi Valley man who is being remembered by his family as a charismatic son and a devoted dad. The arraignment of the Newbury Park man accused of fatally stabbing Michael Majewski has been postponed until May 29. Rudolph Neidhardt, 34, was supposed to be in court […]

Graduating seniors in a class of their own

EDITORIAL

Let’s get this right out of the way: It’s not fair. It’s not fair that high school seniors are missing all those great milestones in their final year of school. No prom. No sports. No senior day. No awards. And no graduation. Yes, there are bigger worries. People are sick and people are dying. And while the stay-at-home mandate appears […]

Readers support candidate Smith

Let me be frank about the May 12 special election to fill our House seat in Congress. We need an experienced leader who is already tackling the COVID-19 crisis and has always protected our well-being. Our district needs someone in Washington who understands the challenges we face, not only from this pandemic, but from a government too long left in […]

Mike Garcia is best for CA-25

Everyone likes a good rematch. The GOP wants payback. What are the odds? Presidential election years juice voter turnout —that’s trickier for Republicans because it attracts occasional voters who, historically, have been more likely to vote Democratic. And there’s no reason to believe that voters from the affluent coastal burbs and majority-minority Central Valley districts that Democrats wrested from Republicans […]
