Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

Easy fire came in fast, strong

Quick response saved homes, Reagan Library

Whipped by strong Santa Ana wind gusts clocked as high as 70 mph in some places, a fire that started near Easy Street and Madera Road in Simi Valley at 6 a.m. Wednesday morning threatened thousands of homes and the landmark Reagan Library. By midday, the fire had grown to about 1,300 acres and displaced 30,000 residents. But firefighters held […]

Challengers line up to fill Hill’s congressional seat

Papadopoulos may join the fray

The resignation by Katie Hill (D-Simi Valley) just days after allegations surfaced that she was engaged in an inappropriate romantic relationship with at least one of her staff members appears to have opened the door for local Republican contenders who wish to re-take the traditionally GOP-leaning 25th Congressional District. In a letter to constituents posted on her Twitter account Oct. […]

Tackling multiple emergencies at once

Simi officials describe hectic scene amid fires

With the winds raging and fire crews working to put out the Easy fire near the Reagan Library on Wednesday, nearly all of Simi Valley was put on notice for a potential loss of power as part of Southern California Edison’s precautionary power shut-off program. And around 1:20 p.m., a second, smaller fire ignited on Yosemite Avenue near the 118 […]

Time to set the clock back

Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. Sun., Nov. 3. Before going to bed the night of Sat., Nov. 2, remember to “fall back” and turn clocks back one hour. While the change to standard time will provide more light in the morning, the evening darkness will arrive noticeably earlier. Arizona and Hawaii are the only two states that don’t […]

The downfall of Katie Hill

EDITORIAL

Following the sudden downfall of Rep. Katie Hill—a rising star in the Democratic party who after just 10 months in office is leaving Congress amid an ethics scandal— many questions remain. A freshman congresswoman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2018, Hill represented Simi Valley, Santa Clarita and the Antelope Valley on the House Armed Services Committee, the […]

Thoughts about Hill’s downfall

A former colleague encouraged me to give Katie Hill a chance to win my support. I’m pretty libertarian on social issues. If someone wants to get naked and smoke a bong, go ahead. If someone wants to get nude and comb a lover’s hair, do it. If one wants an Iron Cross tattoo, have at it. What does bother me […]

A culture of gratitude

As the parent of a Simi Valley High School marching band student, I want to thank Jim Benkert, head coach of the Simi High football team, for positive leadership that seems to go beyond the game. The Simi High marching band works hard to support the football team all season at each home game. They start by stopping by the […]

Two killed, three teens critical following solo vehicle crash

Three Simi Valley teens are continuing to fight for their lives following a crash last week that killed two people and left one other with minor injuries. Around 9:45 p.m. on Oct. 24, Simi Valley police responded to the scene of a solo vehicle crash on Los Angeles Avenue west of Emory Avenue. Once on scene, they discovered a truck […]
