Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

Hundreds gather to plan memorial, call for action at SSFL

Frustration voiced over no progress on cleanup

Nearly 200 people came together over the weekend to commemorate the 60th anniversary of a partial nuclear meltdown at the Santa Susana Field Lab and call for action to clean up the former nuclear energy and rocket engine testing site. In July 1959, while a sodium reactor was being tested at the government-controlled installation, a blockage in the sodium coolant […]

Community unites against ICE policies

About 1,500 people joined Lights for Liberty, a candlelight procession to the Camarillo office of the Department of Homeland Security on the evening of July 12 to demand the closure of migrant detention centers, adding their voices to similar protests held around the nation this past weekend. Before the local march began around dusk, demonstrators gathered in a grandstand area […]

City official’s video speech sparks online controversy

Few topics cause as much division today as immigration. It’s a global hot button. But what is the role of cities and local elected officials in this crisis? Some city councils choose to stay silent and let federal and state legislators battle it out. Others join the fray, voicing their views and calling for action. Last year, the Simi Valley […]

Firefighters work quickly to extinguish blaze

BURNING HOT—A fire gutted the garage of a home in the 3100 block of Geronimo Avenue on Monday. Shortly after 4 p.m., multiple units from Ventura County Fire Department responded to the fire. No injuries were reported and the cause is under investigation. Photographer Mark Lassman said he spoke with one of the residents who was inside the home when […]

Those incensed at council member are being naive

For those who were paying attention last year, it should come as no surprise that first-term Simi Valley Councilmember Ruth Luevanos is injecting herself into the national immigration debate. Luevanos entered the local political fray after becoming disgusted with the former council’s opposition to Senate Bill 54, the “sanctuary state” law. A Democrat, she’s been highly critical of the Trump […]

Disappointed in leaders’ lack of concern

Over the past two days I’ve watched as the conservatives in my Facebook feed attacked an Hispanic City Council member for advising residents of their rights under our Constitution. These same folks were up in arms over athletes’ protests of police brutality against minorities. Our government’s mistreatment of caged brown children? Oh, it’s their own fault and that of their […]
