Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

Cemetery suspends plot sales again

Burial ground installing new inventory system

The El Rancho Simi Pioneer Cemetery has placed a moratorium on all grave plot sales while a new, digital inventory system is installed. “We approved a new software program several months ago to track the inventory of plots, and while we wait for the data to finish being loaded, we approved the moratorium on new plot sales,” said Deborah Burdorf, […]

County medical examiner resigns

Bucholtz was hired last November

The county’s chief medical examiner submitted her resignation last week, less than a year into her tenure. Ventura County Health Care Agency officials didn’t say why Dr. Ann Bucholtz, who was hired last November, resigned her $270,000-a-year position or what her plans are. Her last day on the job will be Sept. 30, Sheila Murphy, agency spokesperson, said in a […]

Indoor shooting range proposal heads to council

A local gun shop’s proposal to operate an indoor shooting range will come before the City Council on Monday. Link Ahlers, owner of Smokin’ Barrel, has relocated his shop from its former location on E. Los Angeles Avenue to 1775 Surveyor Ave. He is proposing to convert a portion of the 14,000-square-foot building into a facility that includes a 22-lane […]

L.A. Avenue widening plan taking shape

Work estimated to take two months

City officials are hammering out plans to widen a roughly quartermile stretch of E. Los Angeles Avenue in central Simi Valley. The 6-foot widening of the westbound side of the road near the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center west of Church Street was spurred on by Green Acres Farm Market’s recently approved sandwich shop, said Ron Fuchiwaki, Simi’s public works […]

Orchard proposal calls for expansion of city’s recycled water system

A developer’s conceptual plan to construct an orchard and water line with the potential to supply recycled H2O to local businesses is taking shape. Simpatica Farmland Acquisitions is proposing to develop an orchard consisting mainly of avocados and citrus on a 1,000-acre site east of the Simi Valley Landfill owned by Waste Management, said Joe Deakin, the city’s assistant public […]

City will take down some military banners

The City of Simi Valley Armed Forces Banner Program has installed over 530 banners since 2010. The program has been such a success that the number of available locations for future banners is minimal. The program was originally designed to display banners of military personnel on active duty. The city recently reviewed the banner recipients. Recipients no longer on active […]

Take the new lane-splitting law in stride

editorial

The number of registered motorcyclists in California continues to grow at a steady pace, and anybody who’s ever driven a street bike, a sport bike or a cruiser knows the flat-out thrill that goes along with it. Revving up and hitting the open road brings an utter exhilaration that’s hard to describe. Problem is, much of the motorcycling that’s done […]

Student’s gift will go a long way

On Sept. 15 I was the guest speaker for a career class at Royal High School in Simi Valley. My topic was nonprofit leadership, and I spent about 45 minutes sharing both my personal story and the story of the founding of Soaring Spirits with the class. As the students filed out after the bell rang, each passed by and […]

Perseverance, hard work pay off

Regarding Darleen Principe’s article “Writing from the White House” in the Sept. 8 edition: This was a good and exciting article depicting the dream of a Santa Susana High School alum, Josh Gray. It shows that perseverance and hard work do pay off. I wish the article covered what level of compensation it pays or if it is a volunteer […]
