Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

Million-dollar baby

It seems that I can no longer afford to be single. Recently I came across this shocking tidbit: “Over a lifetime, unmarried women can pay as much as $1 million more than their married counterparts for healthcare, taxes and more.” Lisa Arnold and Christina Campbell, writers of the article “The High Price of Being Single in America,” further noted: “Many […]

Kevin Feinbloom, a 47-yearold Thousand Oaks resident, turned his personal battle with cancer into an opportunity to help others with the disease. The life-changing chain of events started in August. Feinbloom said he was out to lunch with three of his buddies. After he took a bite of food, his chest felt like it was on fire. “I thought I […]

Diabetics need to focus on eye care

Diabetes is a serious disease that can affect many aspects of the body: the heart and kidneys, blood circulation and even the eyes. Diabetic eye disease has increased in prevalence by 89 percent between 2000 and 2010, and is a leading cause of blindness among American adults. Despite this, vision care is often overlooked by people with diabetes as they […]

PLAY REVIEW ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’

To some, the “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” in the title of the show now playing at the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center refers not to its trio of scandalous scallywags but to composer David Yazbek and book writer Jeffrey Lane, who “borrowed” liberally from a number of existing musicals and parodied others in crafting the show. “ Scoundrels” made it to […]

How the hiker got her groove back

Being a “sufferer” of seasonal affective disorder sounds embarrassing to admit, although I am one of the “afflicted.” There are poor souls with far graver conditions requiring drastic medical intervention, while my “recovery” depends only on the return of spring. For many years I have relied on “ridgeline relief” to put the brakes on the seasonal blues bus bearing down […]

Out to sea

I’m writing this somewhere in the Florida Straits, between Miami and the Bahamas. It’s warm, and the humid breezes are balmy. But the visit is short. I’m a guest aboard the recently launched Royal Princess, the newest cruise ship from Southern California-based Princess Cruises. Royal Princess was officially christened on June 13 in Southampton, England. Her godmother, Kate Middleton, the […]

Recognizing the blessings of hearth and home

COMMENTARY Matters of the Heart

My hands worked over a mound of honey-colored dough, kneading it across a board awash in the warm sunlight of a fall afternoon. The enticing aroma of focaccia bread hung heavy in the quiet hum of tradition. In a sense, I felt connected with countless others who’ve smiled deep within their souls in the satisfaction of such a moment. Traditions […]
