Meeting to address field lab cleanup
A community meeting to address Santa Susana Field Lab cleanup concerns is set for 6:30 p.m. Wed., March 8 at the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center, 3050 E. Los Angeles Ave.
The meeting will discuss the U.S. Department of Energy’s proposal to walk away from its past cleanup commitments and instead leave in place large amounts of nuclear and chemical contamination at the lab.
The DOE recently released a draft statement for the lab cleanup. All options considered would breach the cleanup agreement DOE signed in 2010 and leave portions of the site contaminated.
This meeting of the SSFL Work Group meeting will include presentations about the AOC cleanup agreement, the amounts of contamination that DOE proposes leaving behind and the associated health risks.
The event will also include a discussion of how community members can get more involved in ensuring that the site is fully cleaned up.
Over the years, SSFL housed 10 nuclear reactors, a plutonium fuel fabrication facility and a hot lab for cutting up irradiated nuclear fuel. One reactor suffered a partial meltdown. Other accidents and releases contributed to radioactive contamination of soil, groundwater and surface water.
