Rotary awards $20K in scholarships

The Rotary Club of Simi Sunrise recently awarded $20,000 in scholarships to 16 graduating seniors from all seven of the high schools in Simi Valley: Simi Valley, Royal, Santa Susana, Grace Brethren, Apollo, Monte Vista and Simi Valley Adult Education.

Candidates for the award must demonstrate academic achievement, financial need, community service and school service.

The recipients were notified at their school’s year-end awards ceremony and personally recognized at a recent Simi Sunrise breakfast meeting.

The 2016 scholarship recipients, their high schools and higher education choices:

Apollo: Solana Santana, Moorpark College; and Emily Shapiro, Simi Valley Adult School of Cosmetology.

Grace Brethren: Amanda Palacios, Azusa Pacific University; Thomas Burroughs, Point Loma Nazarene University; and Elizabeth Paxson, Cal Poly San Luis Opisbo.

Monte Vista: Sarah Chaffin, Pacific Union College.

Royal: Robert Ota, USC American University in Paris; Sandra McAteer, UC Davis; and Jeffrey Ho, UCLA.

Santa Susana: Kayla Hoffman, Cal Lutheran University; Matthew Latta, Moorpark College; and Sarah Tran, Pomona College.

Simi Valley High School: Adam Hammon, Brigham Young University Idaho; Julianna Brown, Brigham Young University; and Michael Petralia, Cal Poly San Luis Opisbo.

Simi Valley Adult School: Paula Reyes.
