Rape suspect arrested in Simi

By Darleen Principe

A Moorpark man will face multiple felony charges at his preliminary hearing next month for attempting to rape an elderly woman, according to authorities.

Julio Garcia, 40, was arrested in Simi Valley on Oct. 18, shortly after Moorpark deputies responded to a rape call in the 800 block of Valley Road in Moorpark.

The victim, whose name has been withheld by police, is in her early 80s and did not suffer injuries warranting admittance to a hospital, said Sgt. Barbara Payton, a spokesperson with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office.

Police said Garcia and the woman knew each other before the alleged incident, but no further details about their relationship have been released.

Payton said deputies received a 911 call from the woman’s roommate, who reported a rape “in-progress.”

“( Garcia) fled the scene just prior to (deputies) getting there,” Payton said. “My guess is he knew they were coming.”

Detectives from the Moorpark Police Station were able to track Garcia down at one of his hangouts in the 1800 block of Cochran Street in Simi Valley, the sergeant said.

Because the incident involves sex crimes, detectives with the sheriff’s major crimes bureau in Thousand Oaks continued the investigation.

According to Ventura County Superior Court Records, Garcia is facing felony charges of forcible oral copulation, kidnapping to commit a crime, assault with intent to commit rape during a burglary, attempted forcible rape and elder abuse.

He is also facing a special felony allegation of committing an aggravated sex crime.

Garcia’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 16.

He is being held at the Ventura County Jail in lieu of $490,000 bail.

County court records show Garcia was convicted of disturbing the peace, a misdemeanor, in March 2001.

He has also been convicted of multiple drug charges, public intoxication and petty theft.
