Church plans blood drive

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will host its semiannual blood drive from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Tues., Feb. 7 at 480 Sinaloa Road, Simi Valley.

Donors can sign up online at www.blood4life.org using sponsor code 8043 or email Sherri DeVillers at sdevillers@bloodsystems.org.

All blood donors need to feel healthy on the day of their donation, drink plenty of water or juice and eat a meal before their donation time.

Cholesterol testing is done with every donation.

Donors must be age 16 or older. Teens age 16 need ID and parents permission. Picture ID required of all donors.

All donors will receive a special Sub Zero Ice Cream treat.

Directives focus of presentation

The Simi Valley Senior Center will host a free presentation on Advanced Healthcare Directives, given by Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Wed., Feb. 8 at the Simi Valley Senior Center, 3900 Avenida Simi.

This free interactive workshop will explore the process of healthcare decision-making. Participants will learn techniques to encourage discussions with their loved ones about healthcare wishes.

Attendees will also receive guidance on how to complete a California Advanced Health Care Directive, a document that states an individual’s wishes for care and designates a spokesperson for them if they become incapacitated.

Home healthcare, hospice, and palliative care options will also be discussed.

Los Robles looking at hearts

In recognition of Heart Month, Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center will present a free seminar, “Heart Disease: Prevention, Treatments and Management,” from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sat., Feb. 18 at the Reagan Library, 40 Presidential Drive, Simi Valley.

Doctors Fraidon Azizi, Vishva Dev, Mohammad Gharavi, Michael Papanicolaou, and Leo Polosajian will be the featured speakers.

The cardiologists will discuss causes and risk factors of heart disease; diet, nutritional and lifestyle interventions; early assessment and diagnostic methods including stress tests, coronary calcium scans and noninvasive angiography; treatment options including angioplasty and stents; electrophysiology and irregular heartbeats; and preventive strategies to minimize risks.

A complimentary continental breakfast will be served.
