Simi temple planning ‘feast of tabernacles’
Congregation B’nai Emet will present the following programs at the synagogue, 9 W. Bonita Drive, Simi Valley, unless otherwise noted. •Sukkot, the feast of tabernacles, will be celebrated at 8 p.m. Fri., Sept. 24.
Rabbi Michele Paskow and Cantor Michael Russ will lead the service with Sabbath and holiday prayers. Children will be able to participate in the service and have dessert in the synagogue’s sukkah (booth). •Families with school-age children in grades kindergarten to seventh are invited to an open house to learn about the synagogue’s religious school programs at 11 a.m. Sun., Sept. 26 at the north campus, 3050 Kadota St.
Participants will also have the opportunity to shake the lulav and etrog (symbols of Sukkot) and make ice cream sundaes in the sukkah. •A Simchat Torah celebration, the holiday that marks the end and re-beginning of the reading of the entire Torah, will be at 7 p.m. Fri., Oct. 1. •“A Nite at the Races” will take place from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Sat., Oct. 2 at the Simi Valley Senior Center, 3900 Avenida Simi.
Guests will receive “funny money” to place bets on eight thoroughbred races. Each race is on video and will be projected for all to see.
Tickets, which include refreshments and prizes, are $25 and can be purchased in advance or at the door. Proceeds from the event benefit the congregation.
•A beginning Hebrew class will be offered from 11 a.m. to noon Sundays starting Oct. 3 at the preschool, 3050 Kadota, Simi Valley.
Paskow will teach the course, which is free as part of the Read Hebrew America program.
