Drive safely around schools

Please remind your readers that every year many children are hit by cars while walking to and from school. This includes kids walking just a few feet from a parent’s car to the school.

Who hits these kids? Is it out of control strangers barreling by the school? No. Half the time it is another parent not paying attention or breaking a law they don’t find convenient.

Remember: If both sides of the street are lined with cars, do not stop in the middle of the street to let your child out. You are breaking the law, endangering your child’s life and the lives of other children, and teaching your child that laws only count when you want them to. Be a good example to your kid.

If you get stuck behind a lazy, thoughtless parent who does stop in the middle of the street, do not swerve around them, even if they wave you around when you honk.

There is no passing in a school zone. You are stuck behind the child-endangering, law-breaking jerk. Accept it and wait for her to finish her careless errand before letting your kid out safely.

Better still, leave home early so you don’t have to race. If you are running late, shrug your shoulders and accept that your child will be late to class.

Every year, kids are killed by harried parents dropping kids off at school. Don’t let your kid be one of them. And don’t be one of the parents responsible for the death of another.
