Simi Valley teen falls from moving car

A 49-year-old Simi Valley woman could face charges of reckless driving and child endangerment after she allegedly allowed three teenagers to stand on the bumper of her car as she drove and one of them fell off.

The 17-year-old male who fell had to be treated at Los Robles Hospital for head injuries but was later released.

A police report states that on July 18 at 6:21 p.m., Mary Rotella was driving south on Hudspeth Street in Simi Valley with the boy and two girls standing on the rear bumper of her Ford SUV. They reportedly were holding onto the roof of the car with their hands.

Rotella told police that the teens pleaded with her to allow them to perform a stunt while she drove, the report says.

She said she was going approximately 25 mph when the 17-year-old fell from the SUV.

Rotella was neither cited nor arrested at the time of the incident, but SVPD this week did submit a warrant declaration to the district attorney’s office for consideration of filing charges related to reckless driving and endangering the lives of the juveniles riding on the car.
