Senior Standouts: Santa Susana High School
Kevin Callaway, a gifted singer, songwriter, and musician was a part of many groups and organizations during his time at Santa Susana—but his first love is music.
The son of Debbie Callaway, Kevin released an album earlier this year over the Internet. One of his songs will be used in an upcoming movie entitled, “LA, I Hate You.”
“I have received offers from other artists to use my songs and lyrics on their own CDs and in their shows,” said the 18-year-old, a member of the prestigious CSUN Youth Philharmonic.
At the high school, he was involved in the Book Club, International Club, musical theater ensemble and the jazz choir.
He is a Boy Scout and very active in his church, regularly attending services and Bible studies and helping with the community outreach program. His favorite subject in school was English and his favorite teacher was AP English teacher John Beck.
Justine Albert
“He has such a passion and dedication to each and every one of his students that it’s amazing he has time for anything else in his life,” Kevin said of Beck.
Off campus, he volunteered his time with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Adopt-A-Family and Back to Bethlehem, a reenactment of the town of Bethlehem around Christmas time.
He will attend Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn. where he plans to major in music business.
“I plan to pursue a career in music, hopefully as a touring artist, or as a composer for film and television,” Kevin said.
In 10 years he sees himself touring, composing music, and writing musicals and operas.
Justine Albert
Justine Albert, the daughter of Scott and Rosa Albert, received a superior ranking in monologues three years in a row at the California State Thespian Festival.
Adam Esquer
A member of the International Honor Thespian Society, Justine says she has a “true passion for the Dramatic Arts.” She regularly put her passion to work at the Very Special Arts Festival in Downtown L.A., where she performed for handicapped and mentally challenged children. She also volunteered her time with Big Brothers, Big Sisters.
A member of Santa Susana’s theater arts department for four years, the 18-year-old performed in more than 15 school productions, as well as took on the challenge of being a director and writer. Not surprisingly, she was awarded with the Outstanding Achievement Award in Theater Arts from the school.
She was a member of the vocal department throughout high school and served as president of the Music Club her senior year. Justine was one of eight students who received a perfect score on her SSHS senior project.
Katie Loss
After graduation she will attend Chicago College of the Performing Arts at Roosevelt University.
“Mrs. Melissa Albertson has been a beacon of support and encouragement from day one and has been an amazing mentor,” Justine said of her favorite teacher. “All of the staff and faculty at Santa Susana have been so kind and amazing on my journey through high school.”
She called her parents her two biggest inspirations.
“The undying love, support and encouragement I have received by both of these two amazing people leaves me speechless with awe.”
In 10 years she sees herself on stage pursuing theater and film as a successful working actress.
Adam Esquer
A huge sports fan, Adam Esquer was the founder and the president of the Santa Susana High School Sports Club. He was also a part of the Santa Susana Drill Team.
A gifted student, Adam worked for two years after school as a tutor.
For his academic achievements, the 17-year-old was included into the National Society of High School Scholars and the United States Achievement Academy. He was honored by the National Hispanic Recognition Program.
The son of William and Cindy Esquer, Adam was recently invited to Washington, D.C. to attend the Global Young Leaders Conference. He earned Renaissance Awards for academic excellence, yearbook, mathematics and foreign language.
Adam said his favorite class in school was math, because “There’s only one correct answer.”
He will attend Princeton University and plans to major in operations research and financial engineering.
In 10 years he sees himself working within the Los Angeles Dodgers organization.
Katie Loss
After graduating from Santa Susana, Katie Loss, the daughter of Sam and Tisa Loss, will attend the United States Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.
While in high school, she was very involved in cross country and track and field, earning scholar athlete honors her sophomore, junior and senior years.
The 18-year-old won the cross country team’s “Coaches Award” and “Positive Mental Attitude Award.” For track, she was named “Most Inspirational.”
When she wasn’t doing athletics, Katie was taking part in mock trials. She was the captain of the mock trial prosecution team and was named MVP of the Santa Susana mock trial team. She also served as the club’s historian.
She was also involved in the high school’s Book Club, International Club, Weight Lifting Club and served as secretary of the Art Club.
When asked who has had the biggest influence on her life so far, Katie responded: “My martial arts instructors, particularly Cassie Greenough-Riley, because not only is she a strong and assertive woman, she has uncompromising moral values and is a true role model.”
Asked what she’ll be doing 10 years from now, Katie wrote: “I will have just finished my required service in the U.S. Army and will be deciding whether to continue that career or to pursue occupation as an FBI special agent.”
