Handweavers spin some fun

The Ventura County Handweavers and Spinners Guild, an all-volunteer organization dedicated to education and promotion of fiber arts, will celebrate its 40th anniversary with an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sat., June 26 across from 156 Elm Drive, around the corner from the Camarillo Farmers Market at Elm Drive and Ventura Boulevard, Camarillo.

The free event will feature demonstrations of traditional fiber arts including weaving, spinning, fiber dyeing and basket weaving.

The guild was founded in 1970 by four women and has grown to include more than 70 men and women, including professional fiber artists, who are passionate about sharing and preserving the crafts.

Each year guild members demonstrate traditional and contemporary fiber art skills to historical, art and school groups across the region, including Cowboys, Heroes and Outlaws at the Olivas Adobe in Ventura, Pioneer Jamboree Days at the Stagecoach Inn in Newbury Park and the annual Sheep to Shawl at the Ventura County Fair.

In the Sheep to Shawl event, guild members start with freshly washed sheep’s fleece and process the wool, spin it into yarn and weave a shawl in a few hours.

The shawl is auctioned off to raise funds for the guild’s continuing education programs.
