Follow us on Twitter!

Dedicated readers often tell us they wish we came out every day. (We’re flattered!) Unfortunately, while the Simi Valley Acorn won’t become a daily paper anytime soon, there’s a new way you can keep up with us 24/7.

A-listers do it. Obama did it. Even local candidates jumped on the bandwagon this election cycle. And now we at the Simi Valley Acorn have decided to dip our toes into the swarming social media pool. The first step into the water is Twitter.

We know what you’re thinking. But Twitter isn’t just a tool for the celebrity elite to keep the common folk informed on their ever-captivating, though sometimes surprisingly mundane, lives. Sure, we can learn Ashton Kutcher’s thoughts on just about every world news event or what songs Kim Kardashian works out to or where next Justin Bieber fans can see and scream over the teen heartthrob.

But Twitter has the power to do much more.

Founded in 2006, the San Francisco-based start-up is used and accessed by millions of people across the globe, connecting friends and strangers, businesses and customers, politicians and constituents and, yes, newspapers and readers.

The printed word may be going out of style and some may say the Acorn is old-fashioned, but we know a good thing when we see it.

And it’s a good thing for readers, too. Just by surfing over to our Twitter page (twitter.com/SVAcorn), residents can stay upto date on community happenings and breaking news. Locals can find out what will be in Friday’s edition before it comes out.

There’s something for everybody, from political junkies to stayat home moms: Learn what the City Council decided at its latest meeting. Read about a recent bank robbery. Mark your calendar for a fun family event coming up on the weekend.

Basically, stay plugged into your city and get the inside scoop in 140 characters or less. Just go to twitter.com, take five minutes to sign up for an account, then search for “SVAcorn.” Click on the “follow” button and you’ll immediately receive all Acorn tweets past and present. There’s also an option to start a discussion on an Acorn topic or to send us a direct message.

Your trusted print copy of the Acorn isn’t going anywhere; in fact, we’re getting stronger. But we think it’s high time we jumped on the social media bandwagon. Please join us.
