Opera for kids is all about wolves
Once Upon an Opera will present a family musical “Wolftales” at 7 p.m. Sat., June 12 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 5028 Cochran St., Simi Valley. Admission is free.
The program contains three operas for children. “The Three Piggy Opera,” “Red Riding Hood” and “Kid Who Cried Wolf” are all unique variations of traditional fairy tales with clever words set to familiar operatic arias and other classical music.
The operas are completely staged and costumed and include a ballet. Performances will include the use of super titles to help the listener understand.
The cast includes children and adults from age 5 to 75. In the cast are two Simi Valley residents, Chantal Petty of Sinaloa Middle School and Tiffany Brown of Hillside Middle School.
The creator of Once Upon an Opera is Virginia Stewart, mother of five and a music teacher. The director is Jonathan Sharp, the music director is Virginia Stewart and the artistic director is Alex Britton.

MADD honors 6 Simi cops
Mothers Against Drunk Drivers recognized 65 police officers and deputies for their efforts to keep drunk drivers off county roadways at an event in April at the Reagan Library. The event was hosted by the Oxnard Police Department.
Six of those recognized were officers from the Simi Valley Police Department.
Officers Chris Hahesy, Howard Horwitz, Joshua Lorencz, Michelle McCollum, Steve Philbrook and Jason Wilkinson each received an award plaque and a “23152” pin to wear on their uniforms.
The “23152” pin is presented to officers who make at least 15 DUI arrests in one year. The six Simi Valley officers made a combined total of 217 DUI arrests in 2009.
Lorencz made 60 DUI arrests in 2009. He was also recognized for his enforcement effort at another event in April, the 12th annual MADD California Statewide Law Enforcement and Community Recognition Event in Sacramento.
Rare chance to surf off Pt. Mugu
Registration is open for the third annual Naval Base Ventura County Point Mugu Surf Contest on Sat. and Sun., Aug. 21 and 22 at the naval base in Port Hueneme.
The event is open to the public with free admission and parking.
The five divisions are active duty military men, open women/ military women, young guns (17 and under), bodyboard, and open men.
Entry fees are $20 for active duty military and $100 for civilians.
Entries will be accepted in the order received on a spaceavailable basis. Advance registration is required; day-ofcontest entries will not be accepted.
The event will have vendor and food booths and live music. Quiksilver surfing professionals will perform prior to the Sunday finals.

The Simi Valley Council on Aging, in partnership with the Rancho Simi Senior Club, will host a Bingo Bonanza on Sat., June 19 at the Simi Valley Senor Center, 3900 Avenida Simi.
Doors open at 9:30 a.m. and the games begin at 11 a.m.
Tickets are $25 and include 28 games.
Lunch will be available for purchase.
The event is organized by Council on Aging volunteers.
All funds raised will support senior programs such as Meals on Wheels, Brown Bag and Lifeline.
Tickets can be purchased at the front desk of the senior center and are expected to sell out quickly.

Forum will discuss aid to Africa
A community forum will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tues., June 22 at Simi Valley United Church of Christ, 370 Royal Ave.
Amber Lung will give a presentation on the Oshikuku Basket Project, which was developed to economically empower African women, help them care for children and orphans and share a traditional art form.
A donation of $5 to $10 is suggested, although no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
