Get away on the cheap this summer

5 tips for money-smart travel
With the days getting longer and the weather getting warmer, families are probably itching to take a break from the work and school routine.

Planning a fun getaway doesn’t have to cost a bundle. Use these tips from the Federal Citizen Information Center to save money when traveling.

•Opt for less cushy digs. While travelers might enjoy the service at a fancy hotel, they’ll pay extra for all the perks.

Vacation rentals can be a more affordable option. Rental houses or condos often come equipped with a kitchen so travelers can cook their own meals rather than paying for restaurant food three times a day.

•For thrill-seekers, check local or not-so-local amusement parks for discounts. Because of the economy, some amusement parks are offering cheaper tickets or other discount packages to encourage visitors.

•Explore the national parks. They offer a budget-friendly way to get families outdoors. Hike on the trails or teach the kids some history. The National Park Service website at www.nps .gov/findapark/index.htm lets travelers search for parks by state or by the activity they want to do.

•Find the cheapest gas. Even on short day trips, travelers don’t want to spend a ton of money filling the tank. Use the links on Fueleconomy.gov to find the lowest gas prices both locally and around the country.

•Before you hit the road, check the travel page at www.USA.gov for the latest travel advisories and safety information.

With these tips from the Federal Citizen Information Center, travelers can have a fun and safe time without spending a fortune.
