Witness to Pearl Harbor receives city commendation


STILL GOING STRONG— At Monday’s Simi Valley Memorial Day service at Pioneer Cemetery, 94-year-old Navy veteran Ford W. Rice was given a commendation from the city for being the oldest living veteran in attendance. Here he’s pictured alongside grandson Scott Furbershaw. Rice, a resident of Simi Valley, was aboard a hospital ship in Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941 when the Japanese launched their sudden attack. Rice helped carry the wounded from the U.S.S.
