Simi Valley police officer gets slugged

Alleged attacker, a 56-year-old manmay have mental health issues

A Simi Valley Police officer was reportedly punched in the face while investigating an assault last week.

At about 5:15 p.m. May 12, Dorothy Ginnever called the police department and told them her son, 56-year-old Mark Ginnever, had assaulted her in her home and then left. She told them that her son receives mental health treatment but hadn’t been taking his medication.

Officer Greg Buchanan went to the residence in the 2000 block of Marter Court to investigate. He confirmed that the elder Ginnever had been assaulted and that her son was not around, according to a police report.

The officer reported that at about 11:10 p.m. he found Mark Ginnever walking toward the home.

Buchanan said he tried to talk to Ginnever about what happened with his mother and “suddenly and without provocation” Ginnever punched the officer in the face.

According to the report, Buchanan used a stun gun on Ginniver, but during the encounter both men fell to the ground. Buchanan called for backup.

When officers arrived, they forced Ginnever down to try to take him into custody, but Ginnever reportedly locked his arms under his body to avoid being arrested.

Ginnever was eventually taken into custody and brought to Simi Valley Hospital for treatment of “an injury to his arm sustained during his arrest,” according to the police report. He was released from police custody pending further treatment for his injuries.

The case is under investigation. When the investigation is finished, the police department says it will forward the case to the district attorney’s office and request a warrant to arrest Ginnever on charges of assaulting and resisting a uniformed officer, resulting in injury to the officer.
