Abandoned horses need homes
The Humane Society of Ventura County is seeking homes for eight rescued horses in its care.
Six of the horses are among the 37 severely abused horses rescued from a Lockwood Valley Park ranch in the fall of 2008; the other two are come from another abuse situation.
The ongoing daily care and treatment for the horses are placing a financial strain on the society, said Sherry Brockus, executive director of the nonprofit organization.
Brockus said the court granted $30,000 in restitution from the Lockwood Valley case, “but that’s just a drop in the bucket for taking care of so many horses for such a long time.”
When the horses arrived at the shelter in Ojai, Brockus said, they were emaciated, lethargic and did not trust people.
A year and a half later, “They’re beautiful, healthy and have shiny coats,” she said. “It’s a complete transformation. Now, when they see people, they run up to the fence and hope for carrots.”
