GRAVE SITUATION— Above, Royal High School students, from left, Jennee Kuang, 18; Maddie Kurtz, 16, and Ram Murthy, 17, protest the proposed education budget cuts outside of city hall on Tapo Canyon Road last Friday. At left, senior Shannon Chapman, 17, “plays dead” to symbolize that the reduced funding meant death to education. Chapman, who organized the protest, was influenced by the statewide teacher rallies and feels that students are the ones most affected by the cutbacks and should get involved. Five students in all took part in the demonstration. This week, the school district announced it may have to lay off up to 100 employees.
