Simi man reportedly linked to bank robberies in T.O.
Daniel Paul Raaf
A Simi Valley resident was arrested Monday as a suspect in two recent bank robberies in Thousand Oaks.
The East County Major Crimes Unit allegedly connected Daniel Paul Raaf, 24, to the Jan. 21 robbery of the Wells Fargo Bank at 1760 East Avenida de Los Arboles and the March 12 robbery at the First California Bank at 11 E. Hillcrest Drive.
Items collected during a search warrant at Raaf’s home in the 1500 block of Patricia Avenue linked him to the robberies, Detective Jon Smith of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department said.
Raaf was booked into the Ventura County Jail on two felonies—first degree automated teller machine robbery and first degree robbery. He is being held in lieu of $1-million bail.
The investigation continues as the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, the Los Angeles Police Department and the FBI work together to see if they can find evidence of Raaf’s involvement in other crimes.
“There is evidence to link Raaf with at least one bank robbery in Los Angeles County,” Smith said.
A photo from security cameras of a man wearing sunglasses and a plaid fedora was released after the Jan. 21 Wells Fargo Bank robbery.
During that robbery a man approached one of the tellers with a note demanding money and left quietly after the teller handed him an undisclosed amount of cash.
The man didn’t display a weapon or make any threats.
Besides the fedora and the sunglasses, he wore a dark-colored suit with a green necktie and black gloves.
Witnesses described him as a white male in his 30s, about 6 feet tall, 180 to 190 pounds.
The man in the security photos had short brown hair and a goatee and mustache.
Raaf is 5 feet 11 inches tall, 150 pounds with brown hair and eyes, police records show.
The subject left the area on foot carrying a portfolio and a black umbrella.
“Both bank robberies were very similar with him dressing slightly different,” Smith said.
A bank robber wearing a baseball cap, dark green shirt, blue jeans and black glasses left on foot from the First California Bank on Friday afternoon, March 12 with an undisclosed amount of money.
There was no weapon seen during that robbery either.
The man was said to be 25 to 30 years old and 6 feet tall with a medium build.
Raaf has had no previous robbery convictions in Ventura County.
