Death of man hit by train ruled an accident

A Simi Valley man was killed last Friday when he was struck by a Metrolink commuter train on the tracks near First Street.

The man was identified by the Ventura County Coroner’s Office as Larry Hampsten, 49. Police said foul play was not involved and the coroner’s office ruled out suicide, calling the death an accident.

According to a police report, the Simi Valley Police Department received a call from the Ventura County Fire Department Communications Center at 5:16 p.m. March 12 saying they had just dispatched units in response to a report of a person having been struck by a train in the area of First Street.

When officers arrived on scene, they found that an eastbound Metrolink commuter train was stopped on the railroad tracks east of First Street. Hampsten’s body was discovered along the south side of the railroad tracks, west of Donville Avenue.

Deputies from the Metrolink Detail of the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department arrived on scene and took responsibility for transferring passengers to their destinations.

The police department would like to remind the public never to walk across railroad tracks.
