New CERT class starting soon

The Simi Valley Community Emergency Response Training program will offer a new series of classes from 7 to 10 p.m. for six Thursdays starting April 15 in the Emergency Operations Center in the Simi Valley Police Department, 3901 Alamo St.

The seventh and final class will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sat., May 22 at the Ventura County Regional Fire Training Center in Camarillo.

The program provides basic information about such hazards as earthquakes and brushfires. Participants will learn basic disaster response skills to give support to their household, neighborhood and workplace.

The program is free. Anyone 18 years or older who lives or works in Simi Valley is eligible to participate. Each participant will receive a workbook, certificate of completion and a startup kit with a helmet, gloves, vest and goggles.

Applications are available at the police department or online at www.simivalley.org/CERT. Completed applications will be accepted on a first come, first served basis through Fri., April 2 or until the class is full.

Seats open on local boards

The city of Simi Valley is accepting applications for Neighborhood Council executive board members. Vacancies exist on each of the four boards for two-year terms from July 1, 2010, to June 30, 2012.

Applicants must be age 18 or older and residents of Simi Valley.

The councils meet monthly to review development projects and various issues of community concerns within their boundaries. Following these reviews, the councils advise the City Council and planning commission of their recommendations. The councils are also involved with community volunteer events such as the Arroyo Cleanup.

The deadline for submitting applications is 5 p.m. Tues, May 4.

Community Council to meet

The Simi Valley Community Council will meet at 11:30 a.m. Thurs., April 8 at Lost Canyons Golf Club, 3301 Lost Canyons Drive, Simi Valley.

The meeting will open with a meet-and-greet, followed by lunch and a presentation by the Simi Valley’s Youth Council and youth employment services coordinator.

A $15 lunch menu, which includes a meal and a soft drink, will be available.

A free drawing will be open to all paid members. The prize will be two tickets to a performance of the winner’s choice at the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center.

Meetings provide a forum for members to share their experiences and upcoming events.

Talent show raises funds for Haiti

Ankita Devareddy will present a Haiti Relief Talent Show from 4 to 6 p.m. Sun., March 21 in the multipurpose room at Simi Valley High School, 5400 Cochran St., Simi Valley.

The show will feature performances by Devareddy and Team.

Tickets are $10 at the door.
