‘Sweet Charity’ at Moorpark College features more than 40 student actors

The Moorpark College theatre arts, music and dance departments will present their spring 2010 production of Neil Simon’s musical comedy “Sweet Charity” from March 12 through 28 on the main stage of the college’s Performing Arts Center, 7075 Campus Road, Moorpark.

“Sweet Charity,” based on Federico Fellini’s screenplay “Nights of Cabiria,” was originally choreographed and conceived by Bob Fosse, with music by Cy Coleman.

The play looks at the poignant and funny adventures, or rather the misadventures, in the ways of love encountered by Charity Hope Valentine, a gullible and guileless lady. She is a dance hostess who gives her heart to the wrong man.

The show contains such songs as “Big Spender,” “If They Could See Me Now” and “The Rhythm of Life.”

The production is directed by theater arts instructor John Loprieno, with musical direction provided by music instructor Vail Keck and choreographed by dance instructor Beth Megill. The full stage orchestra will be conducted by Vail Keck.

The show features more than 40 cast members, with more than 100 students from six classes participating onstage and behind the scenes.

Showtimes are 8 p.m. March 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26 and 27 with 2 p.m. matinees on March 14, 21 and 28.

Tickets are $9 for students and $16 for adults with senior and group discounts available.
