Tough playoff week for local teams

No winter sports squad will bring home a title

This was a difficult week for Simi Valley schools in the CIF-Southern Section playoffs, with no team advancing.

The Highlanders won their first-round battle on penalty kicks, 4-1, after a scoreless draw through regulation against Lakewood last weekend. The RHS boys’ soccer team lost in the first round last week.

Royal’s girls’ basketball team also ran into trouble in the Division 2AA quarterfinals, falling 78-22 to Brea Olinda on the road Wednesday.

Destinee La Fountain notched a double-double for RHS, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Royal finished 20-9 overall.

Simi Valley’s boys’ soccer team, which shared a league crown with Royal, lost to San Clemente 4-1 in the second round of its Division 1 tournament on Tuesday.

Senior forward Alan Rovira scored the lone goal for the Pioneers, who held a 1-0 advantage at halftime in the second-round battle before falling behind big in the second half.

The Grace Brethren boys’ soccer team lost a Division 7 second-round game Tuesday, falling 2-1 to Mammoth High School in double overtime. Don Kreitz scored on a Camron Chupp assist for the Lancers.
