Suspect in car theft told cops he took the wrong exit
Three men were arrested in Simi Valley last Friday on charges of grand theft auto after they allegedly made a wrong turn while en route to Los Angeles.
While on routine patrol at 3 a.m. Feb. 19, a Simi Valley police officer observed a silver Nissan Frontier pickup leave the westbound 118 Freeway at Kuehner Drive. The driver of the truck failed to stop for a stop sign at the bottom of the offramp, a police report said.
As the patrol officer attempted to stop the vehicle, the truck quickly re-entered the freeway, traveling eastbound toward Los Angeles County. The Nissan was stopped as the driver exited the freeway at Rocky Peak Road.
The driver identified himself as Iker Villanueva, 21, of Pacoima. He could not produce a valid driver’s license or legal registration documents for the truck he claimed was borrowed from a friend.
The two passengers were Justin Casey, 21, of Reseda, and Ivan Velasquez, 23, of Canoga Park.
Further investigation revealed the Nissan had been stolen earlier in the evening from a resident in North Hollywood.
During a search of the truck, the officers said they found sophisticated tools, including communication devices, which can be used to break into cars and avoid police detection.
Police arrested the driver and both passengers and charged them with auto theft, conspiracy to commit auto theft and possession of burglary tools.
According to the police report, during the investigation one of the suspects lamented, “I got lost and took the wrong offramp.”
The three men were booked at the Ventura County Jail.
