Gravity-powered racers a Scouting tradition
AND THEY’RE OFF!—Cub Scouts from Pack 3633 in Simi Valley and family members anxiously watch as handmade wooden cars speed down the track during a heat at their annual Pinewood Derby Race at Santa Susana Park last Saturday. Pinewood Derby was started by Don Murphy of Manhattan Beach in 1953. Murphy wanted to create a new father-son Cub Scout activity he could do with his 10-year-old son, who was too young to race in the Soap Box Derby. IRIS SMOOT/Acorn Newspapers
