Santa Su wins $20,000 for arts programs

Student video garnered 11,000 online votes

Santa Susana High School has won the grand prize of $20,000 in the Got Milk? Battle for Milkquarious, White Gold Milkdonkulous Giveaway.

As reported in a Simi Valley Acorn story Jan. 15, the California Milk Processor Board, creator of the Got Milk? campaign, sponsored the contest to encourage California teenagers to get creative with their video-making skills for a chance to win funds for their public high schools’ art programs.

Students from the school submitted a video entry that re-created the last of seven scenes from Got Milk?’s online rock opera “Battle for Milkquarious.”

Santa Susana’s Benji Kaufman made the contest his senior project.

He held auditions, wrote the script and filmed and edited the movie. Students at Santa Susana acted out the scene using homemade props and creative video editing.

Ten finalists were selected from more than 100 entries from high schools throughout California. The winner was chosen by online voting by the public.

Santa Susana received close to 11,000 online votes.

Second-place winner Pioneer Technical Center in Madera will receive $10,000. Eight runners-up will be awarded $2,500 each.

Got Milk? will host a check presentation at each of the top 10 schools during the next few weeks.
