Family robbed at gunpoint in own home
A Simi Valley family was bound and robbed at home Monday morning by a group of armed intruders who authorities have yet to identify.
No one was seriously injured during the incident, but the assailants remain at large.
On Jan. 25 at about 8:30 a.m., four to six men entered a home in the 1000 block of Borden Street, just south of Royal High School, armed with semiautomatic handguns, according to Simi Valley police.
Detective Lt. Stephanie Shannon said it appears that the door to the house was unlocked and the men simply walked into the residence, which at the time was occupied by two women, one man and two young boys, ages 2 and 11.
The robbers took all of the occupants to an upstairs bedroom, where they were bound. They then began questioning the victims about money, drugs and guns possibly in the residence, according to a police report.
The men searched the residence for more than an hour and left the house with an undetermined amount of cash, jewelry and car keys. After they left, the family called Simi police at 10 a.m. to report the robbery.
The adult male victim sustained an injury to his head and the left side of his face when he was kicked by one of the robbers, but the abrasions did not require hospital treatment.
Shannon said that the victims did not know the burglars and that the family could only identify them as four to six Hispanic males. No vehicle was seen.
“It was apparently a pretty chaotic scene,” she said, adding that the number of robbers in the home varied depending on which family member police spoke to.
Although the victims told police they didn’t know the subjects, investigators do believe that the home was targeted, Shannon said, “due to specific things that were said during the crime.” She could not elaborate on what was said.
The lieutenant stressed that the incident was a random crime and that this type of home invasion robbery is very rare in Simi Valley.
Still, she said residents must remember to keep their homes and cars locked, even during the day, and keep valuables out of view.
“This appears to be a targeted event, and we have no reason to believe these folks plan on returning, but residents should always be aware of their personal security and they are their first line of defense,” Shannon said. “You just can’t take your safety for granted.”
The Simi Valley Police Department is asking that anyone with information regarding this crime call Det. Gonzales at (805) 583-6207.
