Campaign season 2010: diving in head first

Readers of last week’s Simi Valley Acorn might have found it odd to discover local election coverage in our second issue of the new year, especially above the fold on page 1.

But as we see it, even with the general election still 10 months away, the story of the 2010 Ventura County campaign season is already beginning to unfold—and we don’t want you to miss any of it.

Some people have joked that politicians kick off their reelection campaigns the day they arrive in office.

The funny thing is, that isn’t far from the truth.

Savvy elected officials know it’s never too early to start separating themselves from the competition.

And there’s nothing wrong with that.

The desire to remain in office can serve as motivation for a politician to get things accomplished, or to add to his or her resume.

It also means that incumbents whose seats are up for grabs are constantly making decisions based on polls of voters.

For that reason, we at the Acorn feel it’s important to let the electorate know as soon as possible the names of the ponies that are running this year’s races. That way, voters are informed and know that political footballs are already in the air. The season for rhetoric and electioneering has started early this year.

So expect to find a story in the Acorn each time a new hat is tossed into the ring. We don’t cover endorsements—there are just too many of them—but we will try to keep you informed on other important aspects of the election.

Here in Simi Valley, the seats of Councilmembers Michelle Foster and Glen Becerra and Mayor Paul Miller will be up for election in November. So is the seat of County Supervisor Peter Foy, who represents Simi Valley and Moorpark on the Board of Supervisors. If he wins a majority in June, there’s no runoff in November.

Another interesting race we’ll be covering is the one for Ventura County Sheriff: This is the first time in 30 years the seat is being contested.

So while you might not be ready for the 2010 campaign season to begin, we are. After all, with all the rain we’ve had this week, it’s a perfect time for mudslinging.
