SVUSD encourages more public participation
Simi Valley school board members will return to the dais Jan. 19 for their first meeting of 2010, and some are hoping a new year will bring renewed interest in the business of education.
“We as board members are a voice of the people, but nothing can replace the questions, concerns and ideas of the students and parents, as well as our school district employees,” trustee Eric Lundstrom said. “The meetings are a great place for the community to have a few minutes to speak to the school board and have us hear what’s on their minds.”
Meetings are typically held every three weeks on a Tuesday. Board meetings for the rest of the school year are Feb. 16, March 9, March 30, April 27, May 18, June 8 and June 29.
All meetings are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. and are held at the city of Simi Valley Council Chambers at 2929 Tapo Canyon Road, across from the library.
Superintendent Kathryn Scroggin said those hoping to understand the challenges facing education today can learn a lot by watching a board meeting.
“Those who attend have the opportunity to hear the board discuss the business of the district as they make decisions regarding policy and programs,” Scroggin said.
The meetings are televised live on Channel 10 in Simi Valley. Tapes of the meetings are also available upon request for a fee.
Agendas are posted at least three days before the meeting in various locations as well as at www.simi.k12.ca.us. Any date, time or agenda changes can also be found on the website.
