When being friendly, proceed with caution

After reading Acorn ’s Jan. 1 editorial (“A resolution worth keeping”) I had to comment on it.

I think resolving to make 2010 a kinder, gentler year is a great idea, but I thought a suggestion made was kind of ridiculous.

All too often when shopping I try to be polite. If I happen to make eye contact with someone, I smile. It’s polite. But all I get in return is a blank look or even a scowl.

Some days I don’t even bother looking up because it’s too frustrating.

The idea of helping someone load their groceries out of the goodness of your heart—that is a disaster waiting to happen. People are so suspicious of others that if that were to happen you would be pepper-sprayed before you could offer to help.

I agree with making our community kinder, but sadly I have no hope of such things happening. People are too selfish. I hope to be proven wrong, though.
