Heralding in the new year


MEMORABLE MARCH—Mitchell Lopes, a senior at Simi Valley High School, marches in the 121st Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade on Jan. 1 as a member of the herald trumpets, a group of trumpeters selected from among Southern California’s best high school musicians. Pasadena City College is the host band for the tournament, and each year director Kyle Luck gives area high school musicians the opportunity to earn a chance to march in the parade.
