Greek Orthodox Church to hold Epiphany ceremony at Ventura Harbor
St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church will host its annual Epiphany and Blessing of the Waters Ceremony at noon on Sun., Jan. 10 at the Ventura Harbor.
Epiphany is a feast day of the Christian church that commemorates Christ’s baptism in the Jordan by St. John the Baptist.
After Sunday services at St. Demetrios, 400 Skyway Drive, Camarillo, the congregation and guests will gather dockside outside the Greek at the Harbor restaurant in Ventura Harbor. Prayers will be recited over the ocean asking the Lord to bless the ocean, protect those who sail on it, provide temperate weather and guard the faithful.
A cross will be dipped into the harbor’s water and a dove released to symbolize the descent of the Holy Spirit.
While the prayers are read and the choir chants, the priest will throw a white cross into the water and teenagers of the parish will dive to retrieve it. Prayers are said over the young person who retrieves the cross and all the divers.
A celebratory meal and party with music and dancing will follow the ceremony at the restaurant.
The public is welcome. Tickets for the after-party are available by calling the church office at (805) 482-1273. For more information, go to the website www.saintdem.org.
