Simi Arts Center presents celebrated rock musical ‘Rent’

Jonathon Larson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning musical “Rent” will be presented from Jan. 9 through Feb. 14 at the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center, 3050 Los Angeles Ave.

Showtimes are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays.

The production is directed by David Ralphe and Fred Helsel, with musical direction by Gary Poirot and choreography by Becky Castells.

The rock musical, loosely based on “La Boheme,” is about a group of friends struggling to survive in Manhattan’s Lower East Side and reach the world through their art. In place of the opera’s tuberculosis are AIDS and drug addiction.

Due to the subject matter, the show is recommended for audiences age 14 and above. Tickets are $20 for adults and $16 for seniors and students. For reservations, call the box office at (805) 583-7900.
