Fleeing vehicle slams into car at intersection
Police called off their pursuit of a stolen vehicle moments before the car ran a red light and collided with another car in a Simi Valley intersection on Monday, causing minor injuries.
At about 3:15 p.m. Dec. 21, Simi Valley police officers Frank Mika and Mike Foley saw a car speeding along Aristotle Street. When they attempted to stop the vehicle at Madera Road, the driver refused to yield and continued north on Madera, running a red light at Cochran Street to evade the officers, according to a police report.
Mika and Foley followed the driver onto the 118 Freeway, where the chase reached speeds exceeding 90 mph before the car exited at Stearns Street and other police officers took up the chase.
Officers abandoned the chase at about 3:27 p.m. when they determined it was going too fast for surface streets. The car continued to flee, running a red light at Los Angeles Avenue, where it collided with another vehicle in the intersection. At that point, the driver and a passenger abandoned the car and ran from the accident.
The subjects were found shortly afterward and were taken into custody without a struggle. They were identified as Robert Wood, 19, who was driving, and Christopher Chavez, 18, both of Santa Clarita.
The car had been stolen from the Lancaster area, according to the report.
Wood and Chavez were treated at Simi Valley Hospital for minor to moderate blunt force injuries sustained in the collision. They were booked at Ventura County Main Jail and charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, felony evading, felony hit and run, driving under the influence and being under the influence of a controlled substance.
The passengers of the vehicle that was struck by the stolen car, a female driver and her adult daughter, complained of pain but no other injuries and were also treated and released from the hospital.
