Letter attacking police chief was off base

I wish to address Mike Judge’s rationalizations concerning our police chief (Letters, Simi Valley Acorn , Nov. 27).

Let me start with the title: “Rank and file keeps Simi safe, not police chief.” Really? Our soldiers keep this country safe under leadership and direction of our president—all soldiers, from general to private. Technically, we hire the president to do his job. Isn’t that what we do with our chief? He wasn’t appointed; he was hired.

Was the meeting with the chief where you state you asked your hypothetical question at your neighborhood council meeting? You stated he looked first to the mayor and then a council person prior to answering. Was that your perception?

You go on to state the city is safe because of rank and file officers under the rank of lieutenant. In your years with LAPD, you have risen to the rank of sergeant. Is your perception that you and all on your level and below are what keep L.A. safe?

I suppose after promotion everyone becomes a desk jockey and does not contribute anymore. Sounds like the Peter Principle personified.

Then you expand and mention the chief is a member of Rotary Club. You perceive that as not being important for a police chief. My perception is different, as I want a man to care and be involved in the community on his own time.

Apparently, he doesn’t have as many medals as others below him. Well, he was hired for leadership skills and the ability to motivate. Do they have medals for that? Do you have medals? For what?

Lastly, you mention Steve Sojka, Mike Sedell and our mayor. Why did you leave out Glen Becerra? The union picketed his house as a protest. Just his house. Why not all council members and the mayor?

Your final statement about both sides stretching the truth really got to me. I see one side not only stretching the truth but adding rumor and innuendo. That is the side that is annoying to the public. Nothing but negative rhetoric.

You ran for City Council last year. Whoever wins this time will have to be nonconfrontational, be able to negotiate with others and have the respect not only of other council members, but city staff and the public. Are you going to try again?
