See Simi historian Saturdays at Strathearn
Pat Havens, Simi Valley’s city historian, will autograph her two books from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays, Dec. 5, 12 and 19 at Strathearn Historical Park and Museum’s visitor center, 137 Strathearn Place in Simi Valley.
Her second book, “Simi Valley, the Strathearn Letters: Windows on the Past,” presents a portrait of prominent cattleman and pioneer Robert Perkins Strathearn and his family during the early development of Simi Valley.
Strathearn immigrated from Scotland in 1874. When the Strathearn home ranch headquarters was given to the city in 1969, the contents of the house were mostly intact.
Among the historical documents left in closets and drawers were several hundred photographs and letters written by the Strathearn family from 1894 to 1920.
Havens spent years sorting and transcribing the letters and interviewing family members to document their stories for the book. She also wrote explanatory notes throughout the book regarding the letters and critical issues of the time.
The hardbound book is nearly 400 pages and printed in full color, with numerous paintings by eldest son Robert P. Strathearn Jr. The cost is $45.95. A few numbered editions are still available for $150.
Havens’ first book, “Simi Valley, A Journey Through Time,” was co-written with Bill Appleton and released in 1997. A soft-cover edition costs $29.95 and the hardbound is $49.95.
Docent-led tours of the park will be available during the book-signing hours.
