Don’t fault Taylor Swift for being a crossover success

2009-11-27 / Letters

I was perplexed by Steve Jones’ Nov. 20 letter regarding Taylor Swift’s Country Music Association award.

I seriously doubt that the women who have previously received Female Vocalist of the Year honors would consider Swift’s win a “slap in the face.” Do you speak for them?

Whether or not Taylor Swift is a country or pop singer may be debatable, but she has definitely found a niche in the country music community. She is a crossover artist. What’s wrong with that?

I don’t know much about Swift, nor am I a fan, but I did some research.

Swift has been writing songs since she was 10 years old and wrote/co-wrote every song on her debut album, as well as played guitar. Sounds a lot like talent to me.

It’s too bad Jones is willing to “completely discredit” the award by one mediocre, in his opinion, performance on the broadcast. Not fair.

Would you want to be judged on a single day’s work or on overall body of work?

I was a teenager in the ’80s and lived for the Grammy, American Music and MTV award shows because my favorite artists were taking part in the broadcasts and winning awards. Guess what? That is no longer the case.

My past faves are nowhere to be seen, and I now couldn’t care less who wins or loses and rarely even watch the shows. I would suggest Mr. Jones do the same.
